Bright Red Blood in Stool: The Causes and The Remedies
Bright Red Blood in Stool
If you discover bright red blood in stool (Hematochezia) it can be caused by several different conditions, some of which are serious but most of the common causes of red blood in your stool thankfully are not really a cause for concern. But please for your own sake read this page fully before you do anything else.
Anyone who discovers that they have blood in a stool needs to get professional medical advice to determine the exact causes. I am not a medical doctor and this site is for educational purposes only and not suitable for making an accurate diagnoses.
The blood may not always be bright red in color, often people notice traces of blood on the toilet paper or they notice that the water in the toilet bowl has turned pink in color. Either way it is necessary to find out what is the cause of any blood that you discover when going to the bathroom. Bright red blood in the stool may be caused by several factors;
Hemorrhoids or piles are the most common cause of anal bleeding. Usually the amount of blood is small. Hemorrhoids can be internal as well as external.
Excessive alcohol and or cigarette smoking can also be a cause.
Some people experience bright red blood in stool as a side effect of certain anti-inflammatory pain killers.
Excessive use of aspirin can also be a cause.
Intestinal worms can occasionally be a cause of blood in stools but this is rare and is normally accompanied by weight loss and restless sleep.
Ulcers can occur in the intestine as well as the stomach. Bleeding ulcers can cause a blood in the stool and needs to be treated by a health care professional without delay.
Blood in the stool can be an indication of colon cancer and this is one of the reasons I keep repeating the need for speedy professional health care with any sign of blood in the stool. An accurate diagnosis from a health professional is necessary prior to any treatment.
So what can be done about it?
Ginger Ginger and senna powder mixed in equal quantities and added to hot water makes a beneficial bedtime drink. Taking Jambu fruit on a regular basis is a useful treatment for hemorrhoids. A garlic clove inserted into the rectum is said to stop hemorrhoids from bleeding. The clove should be peeled and allowed to remain in the rectum for several hours, preferably overnight.
Avoiding constipation is obviously very important. If your stool is hard or infrequent and takes significant effort to pass then you are suffering from constipation, it's as simple as that. Try eating more fruit and or drinking a glass of prune juice each morning.
Dehydration is when the body has lost just 2% of its total fluid. One tell-tale sign is yellow or dark coloured urine. Dehydration is one of the main causes of constipation and the easiest one to cure. Drinking at least 2 Lts of water per day (that's pure water...not coffee!) can greatly improve the efficiency of our digestive system and reduce the likely-hood of you finding more blood in your stool. You will also feel better, and drinking water after a meal flushes the digestive tract clean.
Exercise can also help you to avoid constipation as well as benefiting the heart, lungs and just about every organ in the body. So to avoid constipation eat a well balanced diet with plenty fruit in it, drink plenty water, and go for a walk or take exercise regularly. It really is that simple and you will feel a lot better for it too.
